Hacker Joel Ortiz who is accused of stealing $5worth of cryptocurrency is sentenced to 10 years at jail. The scammer accessed users’ assets with the help of SIM swapping.
Cryptocurrency Scam Is Punishable
Ortiz’s sentence was announced by Erin West, the Deputy District Attorney in Santa Clara County, California. According to her, district attorney office’s and prosecutor’s representatives supported the judgment, but asked also to consider possibility of stolen asset recovery. They hope that this will morph into a sorry lesson for the other scammers trying to steal personal private data of miners and crypto assets owners.
Ortiz is not the only scammer who used swapping. He was arrested last year. The scammers managed to access the pages of users in social networks, as well as their mailboxes and crypto currency wallets via software developed by him.
Xzavyer Clemente Narvaez suspected of stealing more than $1 million worth of cryptocurrency was also arrested in USA. It is worth noting that all the arrestees refused to tell about the colleagues who used swapping, too. Several hundreds of victims of scammers went to police in California in 2018 and then official investigation started. The sentence was announced and officially affirmed on March, 14th.
